is increasingly being used as the teaching medium for Business Studies,
Tourism, Nursing, Engineering and other content subjects in Higher Education.
This presents interesting challenges for the English teacher whose students
are not interested in learning English for its own sake, but need English to
help them progress in their studies and future careers. General English is
therefore being replaced by English for Specific Purposes (ESP), but while
still in higher education, learners need a blend of ESP and English for
Academic Purposes (EAP).
This presentation
will focus on a hybrid form of ESP and EAP, known as English for Specific
Academic Purposes (ESAP). Using innovative and creative materials, the
presenter will explain how can you help your students reach the English level
they need to succeed in their chosen fields of study and their future
careers.

Flipping the
classroom the classroom through literature circles is an effective mechanism
for maximizing student talking time and giving your students effective study
time at home. This presentation reports on a second year required course in a
university in Japan that took a literature circles approach where short
stories were used outside of class to facilitate language development in
class. This presentation reviews the procedures of the class and how flipping
the class might optimize learning and is a technique that can be used with
all sorts of reading material including extensive readers used as class
readers.

Learners coming from syllable-timed (i.e. Chinese) or mora-timed
languages (i.e. Japanese) often lack an understanding of how a stress-timed
language such as English is actually spoken, impeding comprehension. Such
learners are often unable to hear words that they know! And this seriously
hinders learning. Presented is a look at how listening should be taught to
help such learners better hear what they are listening to.
