Children are resistant to change and moving house is a major challenge. Clancy, unlike his parents, is not happy with the new house–‘it’s too big’. Blackwood shows Clancy’s old house as something like a child might draw, red pitched roof and central front door behind a low paling fence. It sits companionably with its neighbours while overhead fly pig-shaped clouds. In contrast, the new house towers above the street and seems to lean out in a threatening way. The illustrations, while subtle in detail, directly convey emotion, a boon to the pre-reader following the illustrations as the story is read aloud. Sharp eyes might see a tiny face in one of the neighbouring windows. This is red-haired Millie who comes over to play and lights up Clancy’s life. The fun they have building towers with the empty packing boxes and re-enacting the story of the Three Little Pigs puts heart into the ‘fine house’ making it a home. An obvious choice for preschoolers in the same situation, but also a confidence boost for any young child as the narrative builds (pun intended!) towards the idea that change can bring good things.

This novel explores life, the world and everything through the letters of an angst-ridden teen. Catherine unloads her anxieties, fears, hatreds and loves into scores of letters addressed to the now dead Richard Feynman; a scientist of some note who is the subject of a poster that hangs on Catherine’s wall. By giving the recipient of the letters a name, the protagonist is instantly drawn into a relationship that has to be negotiated and nurtured. The relationship between Catherine and Richard goes up and down as Catherine uses Richard (and her imaginary alliance with him) to unload and vent. But there is nothing new about the woes in Catherine’s life; her parents' split, peer angst, hormones and school are often pivotal themes in young adult fiction. What is interesting is the author’s introduction of an innate character that becomes intrinsically linked to the delivery of the novel’s overall well constructed premise.
